Internet Team Play underway -- 04/24/09
03/31/09: The second match came off without a hitch--even with Prospect H.S. not having PCs to use! In order to use Macs, Prospect had to use Sonia instead of Dasher. The second match was also a lop-sided score with Prospect H.S. defeating DeLaSalle Institute 24-06.
04/07/09: Each of the four matches had troubles. Byron vs DeLaSalle was postponed ahead of time to 4/22. McHenry vs Bloom had to be postponed due to students not being able to sign on even though the McHenry tech person had been able to do so the day before (test systems with students not faculty). The other two had trouble by not going 'by the directions provided' but managed to connect and play the matches anyway.
04/14/09: McHenry continues to have major issues with security settings at their site. Even with their tech people in direct communication with WCL tech the problems remain. McHenry hopes to have problems solved to participate in the last scheduled match on the 21st and then have an opportunity to play the missed games. The postponement worked well for Niles North's schedule. The Byron vs Richards match succeeded in being played but not without difficulty. Byron signed on using a code other than the one assigned to them. A Richards player was able to 'find' his Byron counterpart and the others followed suit.
Players from several schools have signed on and played their counterpart as scheduled without going through the procedures outlined. In essence, they are making their own matches. While this will be the procedure (practice for the fall) for the make-up matches, it works outside of the trial. WCL tech people are able to create the match, have everyone start at once, and easily archive the games and results.
04/21/09: Unfortunately the kinks weren't ironed out by the last night. McHenry was still unable to get through their firewalls despite techs being in direct communication with the WCL tech. Bloom Twp. had their entire system of firewalls set back to default since the last week which meant redoing everything that they had to do the first week to get online after discovering it when they went to play. Niles North stuck out the 100 minute delay and set up matches themselves to play the match. Only Richards and Prospect seemed to play as planned. Byron's tech had originally set them up with a user code other than specified so WCL setup couldn't find them. Byron & Prospect played by making their own matches outside the system.
coming on 04/22/09: Make-up match between Bloom Twp. & Byron (last match of league)
Lincoln-Way Central team signs on in preparation for first ever high school team vs team internet chess match.
Standing ast. coach Mike Corey (l) and head coach Kevin Dailey
Players (l to r) Luke Kozak (4); Justin Suggs (2);
Mike Suggest (1) ; Meghan Pakosz (5); Adam Clark (3)
Meghan was replaced in actual play by Dan Sim when security settings delayed the start of the match.
Starting a little later than originally planned, the BETA League of internet chess team competition opened with Lincoln-Way Central (New Lenox) defeating Bloom Twp. (Chicago Heights) by a 30-00 sweep.
This lead-off match served as a opportunity to iron out kinks for the other eight teams testing the team vs team high school competition. Kinks there were. Even with both coaches having the program pre-installed and setup by their tech people as well as the coaches trying things out, a major hangout occurred at Bloom Twp. Fortunately, the tech person was available and worked directly with WCLs Bill Scott to figure out and solve the program. While starting 45 min after the scheduled time, the match was played successfully. Only one mishap occurred during play. One computer at Bloom Twp. lost its connection. The LWC player waited patiently for the Bloom Twp. to reconnect and in only a couple of minutes the game was back and proceeded smoothly to a conclusion.
Several interesting phenomena was observed during the match. It's hard for a player to resist talking when there is no one across the board to disturb. All players need to take their time in deciding moves. Coaches would do well to explore option settings with their players before playing a match. The setting option allows the board and pieces to be customized to enable optimal viewing by an individual. The default settings were criticized by several players as being difficult to tell the Black from White pieces at times as they were somewhat gray on one side.
This article will be undated each week during the Beta League play (watch the date in the title line).
The matches are being handled by WCL in the same manner as during the professional United States Chess League play over the winter. The target of WCL is to have software available (via the Think Like A King organization) to automate the process that will provide greater flexibility in scheduling and coaches being able to reschedule as needed.

Comments: Because of the various Spring breaks, all schools are able to play April 7 and 21. The remaining match is divided between three weeks: March 24, March 31, and April 14. Therefore, Lincoln-Way Central (white) and Bloom (black) get to be the real testers. The next week on March 31st, Prospect (white) and DeLaSalle (black) will ensure all the problems are ironed out for the rest of the time.

IL hs at SuperNationals IV
The USCF SuperNationals IV was held April 3-5 at the Gaylord Opryland Resort in Nashville, TN. Every Spring the USCF holds three scholastic national tournaments: Elementary (K-6); Junior High (K-9); High School (K-12). These tournaments are held at various locations around the United States generally changing sites each year. But every fourth year the three tournaments are held at one location and called a SuperNational.
Twenty different sections are offered for players to enter with high schoolers having 5 (freshman an additional 3) possibilities depending upon their USCF rating. Next year the USCF National High School Championship will be in Columbus, OH--an easy day's drive from all parts of Illinois. SuperNational V will be in the Spring of 2013 back at the Gaylord Opryland Resort in Nashville, TN.
It's a great time for Illinois high schoolers to join the USCF. During the next year several national tournaments will be available:
July 10-12: U.S. Junior Open, Milwaukee Marriott West in Waukesha, WI
Aug 22: U.S. Game/60 Championship at the Holiday Inn-North Shore in Skokie, IL
Aug 23: U.S. Game/30 Championship at the Holiday Inn-North Shore in Skokie, IL
Nov. 20-22: National Youth Action (Game/30) at the Double Tree Hotel in Oakbrook, IL
Apr 16-18: National Senior High Championship in Columbus, OH
In addition a growing offering of USCF rated tournaments are being offered with sections especially for high school students (see numerous opportunities at http://il-chess.org/events.htm) starting with five offerings in April ( three on the 18th and one the 25th and another the 26th). Bottom line, the cost of a USCF membership can be used a lot in high school rated events in the next 12 months.
The places earned by high school teams from Illinois and all high school individuals are shown in the tables below. Teams were limited to the top four scoring players from a school in the same section. Our lower placing teams had the minimum of two players on their team. Notice how Illinois players placed well up in their sections compared to players from other states.
